Cuna - Federico Staderini

Cuna is an extremely interesting winery in the Casentino, a beautiful valley in the province of Arezzo, which has bet on the potential of Pinot Nero in this area and on the recovery of a local variety called Abrostine. It owes its birth to the initiative of the oenologist and agronomist Federico Staderini, who began his winemaking activity in 2002 and has managed in a few years to make his wines appreciated even by the most discerning palates.

Federico Staderini's vineyards, divided into 7 parcels, extend over 4 hectares at 500 meters above sea level on calcareous-stony soils. The morphological characteristics of the land are quite homogeneous, except for the Brendino vineyard, which reaches 540 meters above sea level and is vinified separately and only in the best years due to its uniqueness. The cultivated grape varieties are Abrostine, an ancient variety of Etruscan origin, and Pinot Nero, whose grapes here, where temperature variations are quite high due to the proximity to the Apennines, achieve a ripeningdefinitely better than the traditional Sangiovese. The management of the vineyards follows the principles of biodynamic agriculture and the production phases favor a manual approach, from winemaking to bottling and labeling. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in open wooden vats ranging in size from 5 to 7 hl. The grapes undergo partial manual destemming, which are then foot-trodden, partly whole berries and carbonic maceration. The Cuna wines do not undergo filtration and are allowed to age in used barriques for 15 to 18 months.

With wisdom and dedication, Federico obtains rustic and intriguing expressions, but at the same time harmonious and with a disarming depth, which authentically reflect the wild territory and the history of this particular area of Tuscany. They are wines with a pleasant and precious taste that require the right time to be fully enjoyed, to the point of being defined as “poetry and culture in a bottle.”
