Decugnano dei Barbi
Decugnano dei Barbi is a winery of historical renown and of international prestige nestled in the western Umbrian hills of Orvietano. The origin of the name is still today shrouded in an aura of mystery, but the ancient production of wine in these lands - belonging to the church of Santa Maria di Decugnano - is documented as far back as 1212. This tale is linked to the Barbi family only from 1973, the year that marks the beginning of the love story between Claudio and the legendary estate.
The Decugnano dei Barbi winery is surrounded by a dreamlike landscape: on one side the tuff caves of Etruscan origin, which today welcome within their cool and humid walls the Metodo Classico sparkling wines produced on site, on the other the rows of vines, on ancient Pliocene soils. A singular and unique terroir, rich in sand and clay, but above all of marine fossils, shells, and oysters that give an exceptional mineral and briny character to the final glass, practically unthinkable from wines that come from the inland. At 300 meters in altitude, the clusters enjoy ideal ventilation, essential for achieving perfect phenolic and aromatic ripening that will translate in the glass into a wide and complex array of fragrant notes.
Alongside the wise and masterful figure of Claudio is today his son Enzo, of humble and generous personality, combined with initiative and love for his land, well-intentioned to carry on the winemaking tradition started by his father with the goal, shared with the oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, of presenting every year on the market labels of territorial character and expressive continuity. Decugnano dei Barbi is not just wine, but is conviviality through wine. Next to the winery stands the magnificent historic villa that has been converted over time into an agriturismo, equipped with a pool with a breathtaking view and the possibility of attending local cooking classes paired with the house labels.
