Disznoko

The Disznoko Winery is located in Hungary at the southwestern tip of the Tokaj-Hegyalja region, about 250 kilometers from Budapest; the estate, covering 20 hectares, is situated on a hill of volcanic origin with clay soil and Perlite pebbles. At the top of this hill, there is a rock that vaguely resembles a wild boar, which is a "diszno" in Hungarian. The Tokaj-Aegyalja region boasts the distinction of being the first region in the world to create a true classification scale for wine-growing areas, and the Disznoko estate has always been classified as a first-class vineyard since 1772. The vineyards are planted on the southern slope of the hill, which protects them from the cold winds coming from the north.

Since the advent of communism, the estate has been state-owned, but after the fall of the regime, it was purchased in 1992 by a large international group. Since that date, the estate has been managed by agronomist M. Laszlo Meszaros. In the last two decades, many improvements have been made both to the replanted vineyards and to the restored or newly constructed facilities of the company; the winery was built under the cellar, 10 meters underground, and ensures a constant temperature of 12° throughout the year.

The grape varieties are typical of the area: Furmint, which covers 60% of the vineyard area, Harslevelu, very fruity, Zetà, and a small quantity of Muscat; the first three in a skillful blend provide one of the most famous wines in the world, Tokaj, the wine that made Louis XIV exclaim "the wine of kings, the king of wines".
