Domaine Jasmin
Domaine Jasmin is a small family-run estate located in Ampuis, in Côte-Rôtie, the northernmost area of the Rhône Valley, always a cradle of extraordinary wines, particularly made with the Syrah and Viognier grape varieties. The origins of viticulture in this area are ancient and date back to the time of the Roman conquest of Gaul. The Rhône Valley was formed by the clash between the Massif Central and the Alps, and in ancient geological eras, the deep trench was occupied by the Mediterranean Sea. The northern area has been influenced by the volcanic activity of the central massif, which has left behind granite rocks, while to the south, calcareous marine deposits and river deposits of sands, gravels, and pebbles, transported by the Rhône, have accumulated.
Côte-Rôtie is characterized by rocky soils with steep slopes, which can reach up to 60%, and are cultivated with terraces supported by dry stone walls. The climate is characterized by hot and dry summers, always very breezy due to the presence of the mistral, and mitigated by the Rhône, which acts as a natural regulator of temperatures. At the end of the 19th century, Alexandre Jasmin, originally from Champagne, decided to move to these lands. He worked in the kitchens of the famous Château d’Ampuis and with his savings bought the first vineyards. His son Joseph dedicated himself to viticulture and also began to vinify the grapes himself. Subsequent generations gradually enlarged the estate by acquiring small vineyards of particular value, all located in particularly suitable places.
Today the domaine covers a total area of six hectares, divided into eleven parcels cultivated 95% with Syrah and the remaining 5% with Viognier. Patrick Jasmin, at the helm of the estate since 1978, passionately continues the work of vigneron, making the most of the ancient savoir-faire passed down from generation to generation. The vines are cultivated on steep slopes and can only be managed with manual labor, without the use of machinery. The high planting density and rigorous pruning forcethe vines to low yields, which guarantee grapes of the highest quality. The harvests are carried out manually, with a careful selection of the bunches and the vinifications are done by individual parcel, in order to highlight the nuances of the terroir. The vinifications are delicate and the wines age for a long time, for about 24 months. The style of the winery is focused on the pursuit of elegance and expressive finesse rather than concentration and power. They are high-quality artisanal wines, made with the sole purpose of giving voice to a magnificent terroir.
