Dominio del Pidio

Dominio del Pidio is a winery located in the heart of Ribera del Duero, one of the most prestigious regions with ancient traditions of Spanish wine. The small village of Quintana del Pidio is about thirty kilometers south of Burgos, in an area where vines were already cultivated and wine was produced for monasteries and Castilian knights a thousand years ago. A land of history and legends, which still today represents an excellence of the territory. It all began in the 11th century, when King Ferdinand I of León commissioned the restoration of an old monastery. Thanks to donations from some local knights, the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos began to become an important ecclesiastical center.

In the 12th century, Quintana del Pidio was born. King Alfonso VIII of Castile, in exchange for a property in Terdesillas, donated to the monastery a Quintana de la Ribera, already famous at the time for its vineyards, which was later renamed Quintana del Pidio. In the following centuries, the tradition has always been kept alive, with the creation of cellars dugunderground. After many vicissitudes, today the estate and the small village have been restored to their former glory, also restoring the monumental cellars underground, which represent one of the oldest winemaking sites in all of Spain. An operation of great historical value, which has allowed the preservation of an invaluable heritage.

The Ribera del Duero estate works the land in one of the most suitable areas in all of Spain and is located in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a plateau situated in the center of the country, at an altitude ranging from 700 to 1,100 meters above sea level. The climate is continental, with cold winters, hot summers, and temperature variations of over 20 °C between day and night. The ripening is slow and late, with grapes that arrive at harvest rich in scents and aromas. The soils are particularly suited, with the presence of silty sands, clayey soils, and limestone layers. Poor and stony soils, very draining and suitable for high-quality viticulture with low yields. In this area, theystill cultivate the local historical grape varieties, Albino and Tinto fino, which are the basis of the wines of Quintana del Pidio.
