Muller Egon
A legend of the Moselle wine region: this brief phrase summarizes the myth of the Egon Müller Scharzhof winery, a historic German reality that has been producing extraordinary quality Riesling for over three centuries. The history of the Weingut began back in 1797, when Jean-Jacques Koch, ancestor of Egon Müller I, started producing wine at the famous and wooded estate of Scharzhof, located just outside the village of Wiltingen, along the Saar River. Here, vine cultivation dates back to Roman times, and the Scharzhof vineyard was owned by the St. Marien ad Martyres monastery in Trier since its foundation around 700 A.D. The tradition is now carried on by Egon Müller IV, the sixth generation of the family in winemaking, who took over from his late father Egon Müller III in 2001. As a testament to the high regard in which the Müller family is held worldwide, the winery is part of the Primum Familiae Vini, a small and prestigious association that brings together the most important family-run wineries from around the world, such as Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Marchesi Antinori, and Famille Perrin.
The principal variety of the Egon Müller Scharzhof estate is, needless to say, the Riesling Renano, a grape variety cultivated on the characteristic steep hillside soils of the Moselle rich in slate. The agronomic management excludes the use of synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides and herbicides, and aims to achieve low yields per hectare in order to enhance the quality of each individual grape. Among the prized parcels that the Müller family can boast is a century-old vineyard planted on its own roots as it survived phylloxera. The winemaking objective of the estate is to enhance the exceptional quality of the available vineyards, a goal pursued through minimal and non-invasive interventions. Fermented in steel or wood through spontaneous fermentations, almost all of the Rieslings from the winery benefit from noble rot, whose development is sought after as it can provide further complexity to the wines.
To understand fully the exceptional winemaking potential of the Riesling Renano, one must taste the wines of Egon Müller, iconic expressions of the most famous German grape variety, characterized by a vibrant mineral signature and endowed with unparalleled longevity. Not surprisingly, the wines of the Müller family are among the most expensive whites in the world.
