Felton Road
Felton Road Wines is a New Zealand winery located in the Central Otago region, in the central part of the South Island of New Zealand. It is one of the most renowned areas in the country for viticulture, which in recent decades has gained international attention for the continuous qualitative growth of its wines. The estate includes four different vineyards: MacMuir, The Elms, Calvert, and Carnish Point, each with its own particular characteristics. This vast selection of terroir, with different microclimates and soil compositions, allows for the cultivation of each grape variety in the best area. The MacMuir Vineyard spans 5 hectares and is located near the hilly area of Bannockburn Gold Sluicings. The soils are characterized by a silt-clay matrix with alluvial gravels and lake sands. This is an area particularly suited for Pinot Noir.
The Elms vineyard covers 14.7 hectares and is north-facing in a gently sloping valley, offering excellent exposures. The area features two different types of soils. The area composed of mother rock of shale, covered by alluvial materials, gravels, fine sediments, and limestone, has proven suitable for Pinot Noir. The Lochar area, characterized by a layer of several meters of gravels and sands, with clay veins, is perfect for white grape varieties, particularly for Riesling and Chardonnay. Calvert is a vineyard of just over 4 hectares, located a few kilometers east of The Elms Vineyard. The clay and silt soils, with the presence of sands and gravels, are ideal for producing a great Pinot Noir. Finally, the 7 hectares of the Cornisch Point vineyard, characterized by clay and sandy soils, resting on deeper layers of ancient glacial and alluvial gravels, are perfect for Pinot Nero and Chardonnay.
The vineyards are managed with extreme care, with handwork: from pruning the canes to thinning the clusters to lower yields. Only organic compost is used for fertilization, and in the fields, the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture are followed. Genuine and healthy grapes allow for the production of excellent quality labels, with very interesting versions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling, capable of holding their own against bottles from more prestigious and famous wine regions of the world.
