Foursquare
Foursquare is located in Barbados and is one of the most well-known and successful distilleries in the Caribbean. Its owner, Richard Sale, is considered one of the undisputed masters of rum: he has transformed the distillery that his family has managed for four generations into the most modern and technologically advanced rum producer in the Caribbean, without compromising the authenticity of the distillate. Alongside the most well-known and widespread rums, the distillery continues to carry on a small production of rum obtained with artisanal pot still discontinuous still. Despite the great success achieved, Richard Sale has remained a traditionalist and avoids the use of additives or the addition of sugars and caramel.
The rums produced by Foursquare Distillery come from high-quality sugarcane molasses imported mostly from nearby Guyana, fermented in closed steel tanks for about 44 hours: “we avoid wood, contact with air, and overly long fermentations. We don’t want to stress our yeasts and we don’t want second fermentations,” declares Richard Sale. Distillation occurs through a continuous double-column still in the style of Coffey Still or with a pot still discontinuous still. All rums are entirely produced, blended, and aged inside the distillery, which is why we speak of Single Blended Rum.
The Foursquare distillery produces different types of rum, which have become a symbol of Barbados. From the collaboration with Luca Gargano of Velier, one of the world’s leading rum experts, a vintage rum from the Habitation Velier range has been produced for the Italian market and a Single Blended Rum called Triptych because it comes from three different vintages. These are rare and prestigious expressions of rum and white rum from Barbados created for connoisseurs and high-level rum enthusiasts.
