Brunelli - Le Chiuse di Sotto

The Podere Le Chiuse di Sotto is a magnificent estate located in the northern area of the denomination's territory. The winery was founded by Gianni Brunelli in 1987 when he purchased the farm where his father had worked. The property extends over five hectares, of which only 2 are cultivated with vineyards and the rest is designated for olive groves. Some old vines were planted by Gianni's father in the late 1940s and represent both the historical memory of the estate and an important generational and family bond. The Podere was expanded in the 1990s with the purchase of Podernovone, which covers about ten hectares and is located in the southeastern area of the ilcinese district. The new Podere consists of four different vineyards: Olmo, Oliva, Quercia, and Gelso, all cultivated with Sangiovese, except for a small plot of Merlot.

The hill of Montalcino represents an ideal terroir for Sangiovese. The suitable soils, rich in galestro and alberese, the altitude, and the cool climate with significant temperature variations, mitigatedby the influence of the sea breezes, constitute an ideal habitat for the vine. The desire to produce great wines has led Le Chiuse di Sotto to focus on the vineyard to obtain high-quality grapes. All farming operations are carried out according to the needs of each individual plot, evaluating the climatic trend of the year and without applying standardized rules. The vineyards are managed with low yields per hectare, and the harvests take place only when the grapes have reached the right degree of ripeness. The collection of the bunches is manual, with a first selection in the vineyard and a second in the cellar on sorting tables, so as to initiate vinification only with perfectly healthy grapes.

The new winery was built in 2015 in Podernovone, very simply, focusing mainly on functionality, the low environmental and energy impact of the construction, using solar energy. All operations are carried out by gravity, without the use of pumps to avoid damaging the grapes or stressing the musts. For vinification, stainless steel tanks are usedwith fermentation temperatures not exceeding 26-27 °C and very delicate extractions, in order to have fine and elegant tannins. The aging takes place traditionally in Slavonian oak barrels from 5 to 30 hectoliters. The wines are bottled only with a light filtration.
