Cherchi Giovanni
The origin of the Cherchi winery intertwines with that of the homonymous Sardinian family, established in 1970 in Usini, a small municipality located not far from Sassari. Giovanni, known as "Billia", decides to start producing wine in this part of the island after inheriting two hectares of land. From the very beginning, the project is ambitious and aims to produce wines that faithfully tell the true soul of the territory of origin. In light of this, Giovanni dedicates himself particularly to an indigenous grape variety, the Cagnulari, which is now practically extinct, and to the enhancement of Vermentino. Over the decades, many goals have been achieved, but the spirit of those who work at the Cherchi winery has remained the same, guided by the humility of someone who considers themselves merely a winemaker with the mission of protecting an important wine and cultural heritage.
The vineyards of Cherchi extend over 30 hectares, located in the territory surrounding Usini, at an altitude of about 200 meters above sea level. Here, the limestone hills alternate with valleys, and the marine breezes, along with the temperature variations, help make the cultivated grapes rich in organoleptic characteristics. The plants, cultivated using the guyot system, are divided among indigenous grape varieties such as Vermentino, Cagnulari, and Cannonau. Thanks to the particular climatic conditions and the experience gained in the vineyard, limited chemical and plant protection products are used, allowing the harvest to arrive with healthy and high-quality grapes. The winery, a modern and functional space, is occupied by machinery for processing, storage, and bottling. In the underground part is the area dedicated to aging, where the finest reds mature in oak barrels.
