Gérard Bertrand
Gérard Bertrand is a French winemaker famous for his passion for organic and biodynamic agriculture. After a significant sports career as a rugby player, Gérard began his new activity in Corbières around the mid-1970s, with the first harvests and a great passion for the world of wine. He completed his training in the following decade, following the teachings of his father George, and today he is passing the baton of the company to the new generation, represented by his children Emma and Mathias. From the rugby fields, Gérard brought to the vineyard the desire to always commit himself to achieve the best possible results. Thanks to this personal attitude, he has worked hard to add value to the territory to promote his region worldwide.
After the premature passing of his father, in 1987 he began to personally manage the Domaine de Villemajou, and after a few years, he founded a company to showcase the range of his wines from the South of France. In the following years, he acquired the Domaine de Cigalus, Château Laville Bertrou, and Château l’Hospitalet, located within the Natural Park of la Clape, between Narbonne and the Mediterranean coast. His properties were later enriched with the acquisition of prestigious estates in Languedoc: Domaine de l'Aigle, Château la Sauvageonne, Château la Soujeole, Clos d’Ora, Clos du Temple, Château les Karantes, Château Aigues-Vives, Cap Insula, Château des deux Rocs, Château de Tarailhan, and Domaine de l’Estagnère.
A convinced supporter that viticulture practiced with respect for the environment is the best way to highlight the peculiarities of a territory and produce great wines, in 2002 he began to follow biodynamic practices. The new way of managing the vineyards has allowed the plants to become more resilient and to find a better productive balance, within a context of healthy and rich biodiversity. In addition to biodynamics, Gérard Bertrand's estates share three other important values. Excellence is part of the corporate culture and permeates every aspect of the activity, from the vineyard, to the cellar, to the commercial aspects related to the world of wine. The defense of nature is a fundamental element of the corporate philosophy. Preserving the environment and working in harmony with the ecosystem are essential prerequisites for every business practice. Finally, the last value, but not the least important, is the convivial spirit that is expressed in the pleasure of tasting a glass with friends.
