H. M. Borges

H. M. Borges is one of the oldest wineries on the Atlantic island of Madeira, founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges after a long experience in selecting and selling the best wines of the island. Today the winery is run by the fourth generation of the Borges family, who have managed to maintain the authentic and traditional character of Madeira wines that are naturally aged in the ancient family granary.

The Borges family winery is located in the center of the small town of Funchal in a century-old building. Here, grapes are sourced directly from farmers scattered throughout the island. The vines are trained in a ‘latada’, a typical trellising system, and rest on volcanic soils, often lapped by the sea. The very particular terroir and the centuries-old peasant wisdom allow for the cultivation of healthy grapes rich in aromatic compounds, from which very characteristic fortified wines are born. From Sercial grapes, dry wines are produced; from Verdelho, medium-dry wines; from the varieties Boal and Malmsey, sweet wines.

The wines of the H.M Borges wineryrepresent a traditional expression of the island of Madeira. They arise from a long production process that involves several steps: destemming and pressing of the grapes, vinification of the must in stainless steel tanks, interruption of fermentation through fortification, “estufagem”, which means aging for 3 months at high temperature in stainless steel tanks heated up to 50°C, “estàgio”, a resting period of 90 days at room temperature, and “canteiro”, long maturation in oak barrels placed on beams. The Borges family manages this process with great expertise and centuries-old wisdom, giving life to unique and unrepeatable wines.
