I Custodi delle Vigne dell'Etna
The Guardians of the Vines of Etna is a constantly evolving wine-producing reality, in one of the most characteristic areas of Sicily: the Etna region. The volcanic soil, the mineral richness of the land, the cold of the mountain, and the sun of Sicily blend with the hands and mules of the "Vigneri", the Etna winemakers who have cultivated the historic vines of the territory naturally, without chemicals and with respect for the environment, now gathered in a consortium promoted by Salvo Foti, the winemaker of the winery that has revived this ancient association.
The vineyards are distributed in a band between 650 and 1,200 meters in altitude, among the most enologically vocated areas of the volcano. The vines, many over a hundred years old, are cultivated in the alberello style on lava and dry soils, with high density per hectare and a quinconce system, meaning each vine has equal distance from those surrounding it. The ancient terraces made of lava stone help drain rainwater and ensure good ventilation, essential in the hot summer. The vines struggle to survive in these sandy soils, but the result is a very rich fruit, of great balance and acidity, generally harvested late.
The attention in the vineyard can only reflect equally on the wines. The Guardians of the Vines of Etna use indigenous yeasts, and their wines truly preserve all the uniqueness of the Etna terroir. The result is a range of Etna wines: red, white, and rosé, fruity, fresh, and juicy, full of balance, just like the great territory they represent and whose secrets they safeguard.
