Foillard Jean

Jean Foillard is a winemaker, an artisan to whom we owe the rebirth and global reevaluation of the wine region of Beaujolais, a land historically dedicated to the quantity and export of simple and direct wines. A student and follower of the teachings of enological titans like Jules Chauvet and Marcel Lapierre, Foillard took over the family business in the 1980s and gradually transformed his production of Gamay from simple red to a bastion of his territory, managing to express in this vigorous grape the finesse and depth foreign to conventions.

Today, Jean Foillard is undoubtedly one of the reference points (historical and organoleptic) regarding the appelation Morgon, an area of about 1,100 hectares located in the municipality of Villié-Morgon and situated in the northern area of Beaujolais, where there is a rediscovery of various municipal crus capable of giving elegant Gamay that easily tend towards “pinoter, that is, able to develop after long aging hints and nuances that approach the great Pinot Noir of Burgundy.approach the great Pinot Noir of Burgundy. Foillard currently manages approximately 15 hectares, divided between Morgon and the nearby Fleurie, among which he boasts a plot located on the famous hill of Py, a true cru of Morgon consisting of an extinct volcano: thanks to its disintegration of schist and manganese, it gives the vines a clayey and draining soil, with a very high viticultural vocation.

The Morgon of Jean Foillard are therefore born from the perfect geological composition of the soils, which makes the grapes healthy and rich in minerals, alongside spontaneous fermentations, very low use of sulfur, and semi-carbonic maceration in the cellar, a technique historically well-rooted in the territory of Beaujolais that sees the unfolding of an enzymatic fermentation alongside the classic alcoholic fermentation: from here derive violet explosions with delicious aromas of ripe fruit, enriched by noble tannic weaves, complex bouquets, and the incredible aging potential that now represent the bastion of a region that through artisans like Foillard, Lapierre, and Chamonard is experiencing its renaissance.
