Jerome Prevost
Jerome Prevost is a prestigious producer of Champagne, skilled like few in enhancing the Meunier, a grape variety from which he produces a limited and highly sought-after output. The estate was founded in 1987, the year when the just twenty-one-year-old Jerome inherited just over 2 hectares of vineyards from his family, focusing his efforts on the least considered grape among the three main ones in Champagne: the Meunier. For about ten years, the vigneron sold his grapes to various local producers while simultaneously dedicating himself to the production of very few bottles of his own. The turning point came when Anselme Selosse, a well-known name in Champagne, tasted one of these bottles sensing the potential of Jerome and his vineyards, encouraging him to confidently embark on an independent path in 1998. Today the winery, located in the municipality of Gueux, a few kilometers west of Reims, at the foot of the Petite Montagne, is considered a benchmark for Meunier and, after years spent as Récoltant Manipulant, in 2017 Jerome Prevost attained the status of Négociant to be able to purchase grapes in case of difficult vintages. Jerome Prevost has just 2 hectares of owned vineyards, located in the lieu-dit Les Béguiens and almost exclusively dedicated to Meunier, although the plot also contains about 4% of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. The vines were planted in the '60s on deep sandy-limestone soils, and the grapes of the different varieties are all vinified together in small French oak barrels. After a few months of maturation in the same barrels, the vintage wine is combined with the vin de reserve from the previous vintage, and the blend is then bottled for refermentation according to the Champenoise Method. The sur lie aging in glass is not prolonged, and the wines are finally marketed without any dosage or with very low dosages. There are two main labels produced by the vigneron Jerome Prevost: the Champagne ‘La Closerie Les Béguiens’, the very first sparkling wine ever made, and the Champagne ‘La Closerie Fac-Simile’, the “rosé” version of the previous one, made with the addition of red wine from carefully selected grapes. These Champagnes, which show the two sides of the same coin, are united by a pure, rich, and generous expressiveness, distinctive traits of the sparkling wines of Jerome Prevost.
