Klet Brda

Klet Brda is the most important reality of the Slovenian region of Goriška Brda, an extension beyond the border of the Collio goriziano. It is a cooperative founded in 1957, still managed today by local winemakers, who deliver the grapes from their vineyards to the winery. Despite the subsequent development of many private estates, Klet Brda has continued to represent an essential reference point for the territory and produces a range of excellent labels made with the grape varieties historically present in these lands. The origins of viticulture in this area are ancient. The first evidence of the domestication of Vitis vinifera dates back to the 3rd century BC, although its cultivation spread especially after the Roman colonization. The soils are of ancient marine origin and are composed of layers of sandstone and limestone marls, friable and very rich in mineral substances. Soils poor in organic matter and very draining, suitable for high-quality viticulture based on low natural yields. The vineyards are located within an unspoiled environmental context rich in biodiversity, with large wooded areas. The vines are cultivated only in the best hilly exposures, at an altitude between 200 and 350 meters above sea level, often on steep slopes or terraces that require labor-intensive manual work.

The winemakers of the cooperative cultivate their vineyards according to the principles of sustainable agriculture, with full respect for the environment and with extreme care. Following the oldest local customs, 27% of the vineyards are cultivated with Rebula or
