Kmetija Stekar

Kmetija Stekar is a historic and identity-driven winery in the territory of Collio Sloveno, known by the locals as Goriska Brda and corresponding to the far western border of Slovenia. The rural, agricultural, and territorial vocation of this small production reality, founded in 1672, is well expressed by the term “Kmetija,” which literally means “farm.” In addition to producing wines with a straightforward, authentic, and artisanal stamp, the spouses Janko and Tamara also take care of raising poultry, cultivating fruit, and managing the agriturismo.

Tamara and Janko Stekar are the heirs of a centuries-old family tradition linked to working the land, and their wine production maintains a primitive and ancestral character, far removed from the dogmas of modern enology. The presence of a large forest surrounding the rows and the ubiquitous presence of fruit trees constitute an important source of biodiversity that ensures the natural balance of the small vineyards cultivated according to organic farming. In the winery, vinifications are conducted with minimal intervention, according to a production philosophy based on the spontaneity of the terroir: “in the winery, there is always less to do, fermentations start spontaneously, and the wines make themselves.” For Janco and Tamara, there are no standard procedures to follow, and each seasonal trend is accommodated differently, always respecting local production traditions: maceration on the skins at least throughout the fermentation and a ban on adding selected yeasts. Aside from these few rules, each vintage is interpreted differently, according to the experience and taste of the producer.

The wines of Kmetija Stekar are always intense and complex, sometimes surprising and disconcerting: authentic and uncompromising expressions of the most traditional face of Collio Sloveno. The most famous and identity-driven labels arise from long macerations on the skins and are characterized by great complexity and an intense volatile acidity that makes the drinking dynamic and satisfying. They are

orange wine with a explosive and at times controversial personality, capable of giving unique and unrepeatable emotions, able to overturn the rules of harmony and taste.
