Kreydenweiss Marc
The Domaine Kreydenweiss is located in Alsace in Andlau. The Kreydenweiss family has been cultivating the vineyard in these lands since 1850 and today at the helm of the estate is Antoine, who, with his wife Charlotte, carries on a centuries-old tradition of 13 generations. History and customs are the foundation of Antoine's philosophy, who works the land with the utmost respect for nature, as if it were a precious gift received from ancestors that must then be passed on to children. Referring to the culture and customs of past centuries, Antoine immediately decided to reject the use of any chemical substances to keep the nature of the places intact. For this reason, his interest soon turned towards the principles of organic farming and especially towards the practices of biodynamics.
The vineyard extends in the hilly area of Andlau, with some plots also in Eichhoffen, Mittelbergheim, and Barr. The estate includes a remarkable variety of terroir, with different soils and microclimates, which has allowed for the cultivation of each variety in the most suitable place. The composition of the soils is a small mosaic made up of sandstones, granite, gray, blue or black schists, and limestone. The vines can enjoy a sunny exposure facing south and southeast and are cultivated with the classic Alsatian varieties: Pinot Bianco, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Auxerrois, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Noir. The vineyard is considered a true living organism within a broader natural ecosystem, which must be preserved in its integrity, trying to intervene as little as possible with human activity.
This conception has given rise to the need to approach biodynamics and embrace its vision to seek to obtain healthy and genuine grapes, an indispensable prerequisite for creating great terroir wines. Antoine's work is aimed at enhancing the natural vitality of the soil through the use of preparations of vegetable, animal, or mineral nature, which help to give the vineyard a natural balance and make it more resilient. Once it has regained its optimal vegetative and productive expression, the vine is able to become true interpreters of the characteristics of the terroir and produce high-quality grapes. Thus, a range of wines is born that are a direct and precise expression of the particular characteristics of the place. Fermentations occur spontaneously using only indigenous yeasts. The aging takes place on the lees, in order to naturally protect the wines and make them more aromatic, complex, and deep. The use of sulfur is kept to a minimum to ensure expressive purity.
