La Baia del Sole
La Baia del Sole is a splendid estate located in Ortonovo, in the Colli di Luni area, right on the border between Liguria and Toscana. The Federici family has been cultivating these lands since the early 1900s and in 1985 decided to direct the agricultural activity towards viticulture, with the intent of producing quality wines with a typically territorial character, focusing especially on Vermentino, the white grape variety historically grown in the Luni area. It is a family-run reality that has preserved the passion for the vineyard and the artisanal care in the wine-making process.
The estate is located in an area that boasts a very ancient history. The port of Luni was an important commercial hub during Roman times, and the culture of the vine was already present in these lands. The vineyards are cultivated on hills overlooking the sea and protected from the cold winds descending from the northeast from the Apuane Alps. The bright and sunny exposures and the sea breezes create a typically Mediterranean microclimate, particularly favorable for viticulture. The vineyards are located within an uncontaminated natural ecosystem characterized by the presence of olive groves and a lush Mediterranean scrub. The soils are composed of clays, silt, and sand, with abundant skeleton presence, especially in the high hill areas. The Federici family, in addition to the grapes from their own vineyards, collaborates with about seventy suppliers who personally cultivate small plots in highly suitable areas.
Faithful to the traditions of the territory, La Baia del Sole primarily cultivates Vermentino, which over the centuries has found in this area a perfect interaction with a territory particularly suited to its needs. The estate also cultivates the white grape varieties Albarola, Malvasia, Trebbiano, and the red grape varieties Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, and Syrah. The philosophy of the winery is oriented towards uncompromising quality. All harvesting operations are carried out manually, with a careful selection of the best bunches directly in the vineyard. The winery is equipped with the most modern technologies, in order to ensure precise vinification that respects high-quality raw materials.
