La Piana
La Piana is volcanic land, it is the sea breeze blowing in the distance, it is unspoiled nature where time seems to have stopped.
We arrive at the Island of Capraia with a one-way ticket and the desire to explore the remote corners of this magical place. "Il Pian di Santo Stefano" where the La Piana winery is located occupies the central part of the island, immersed in the thickest and fragrant Mediterranean scrub, which gives a unique soul to the wines produced here. The project by Alice and Eros Bollani together with Giuseppe Gnaccarini began in 2000, the year that marked the first harvest, and finally concluded in 2015 with the complete renovation of the winemaking cellar, which was built from the foundations of the old prison workshop walls. The family's land has indeed been rented out for the entire last century to the Penal Colony, and it was the inmates who took care of it. The family's return to the island and the birth of the winery coincides with the recovery of viticulture in this area that had been left to its own devices for a while due to the lack of labor following the prison's closure.little to itself, due to the lack of labor following the prison's closure. It has certainly not been easy, but the La Piana winery has managed to take on all the burdens and (above all) the honors of carrying out this territorial agricultural work, effectively establishing itself as the only wine reality on the entire island.
The vineyards arranged on terraces and surrounded by dry stone walls rest on ancient volcanic soils, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The typical varieties of the area, such as Ansonica, Vermentino, Ciliegiolo, and Sangiovese, are cultivated according to the principles of organic farming, certified on the label by Ecocert, in perfect integration between productive activities and the natural context of the place. Without a doubt, Aleatico occupies a place of absolute importance in the heart of the La Piana winery, as the symbolic grape of island viticulture in Capraia, from which a Passito "for meditation" and a fresh and fruity rosé are produced.rosé. A noteworthy mention for the experiments carried out during the winemaking phase, such as the use of terracotta amphorae for the aging of a red, symbolizing the fact that only courage and infinite curiosity form the solid foundations of a wine success, like the one currently happening at La Piana!
