La Staffa
The wine-growing reality of La Staffa is an artisanal spokesperson of the classic territory of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, an area that gives rise to some of the most appreciated white wines in all of Italy. The winery operates precisely within the municipality of Staffolo, in Contrada Castellaretta, in the southern area of the denomination. At the helm of the estate is the young Riccardo Baldi, a talented and enterprising producer who passionately safeguards the territory. The municipality of Staffolo has always been linked to viticulture, so much so that, according to a local legend, the name Staffolo derives from the Greek term “staphilé,” which means “bunch of grapes.”
The La Staffa estate extends over 12 hectares of vineyards managed organically and dedicated almost exclusively to Verdicchio, a grape variety that has written the history of Castelli di Jesi, alongside small percentages of Montepulciano and Trebbiano. The rows, some of which exceed 50 years of age, rest on clay-limestone soils that were once occupied by brackish springs, a factor at the base of the pronounced savory-mineral character of the wines, while the altitude ranging between 400 and 500 meters above sea level and the high temperature excursions between day and night contribute to their remarkable freshness and aromatic finesse. The harvest is done by hand with careful selection of the grapes, which are then processed with meticulous care excluding any invasive winemaking practices. For spontaneous fermentations and subsequent aging, mainly cement tanks are used, but also stainless steel tanks. The exception is the Rosso ‘Rubinia’ which ages instead in barrique.
Although the production of the La Staffa winery of Riccardo Baldi is rather limited, the types of wines produced are varied, with the traditional Verdicchio dei Castelli Classico Superiore accompanied by the bottle-fermented Bianco Frizzante Sur Lie ‘Mai Sentito’, the Rosato ‘Euphoria’ and the Rosso ‘Rubinia’. The flagship label is the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore ‘Rincrocca’, an authentic and characterful expression of the territory.
