Le Berne
Le Berne represents a traditional reality uniquely linked to the vinification of Nobile di Montepulciano, mentioned as early as 1685 by the poet Francesco Redi, who praised it in the work Bacco in Toscana, describing it as “the King of all wines!”. Redi was so impressed by its elegance and finesse that he wrote an ode to Count Federico Veterani, in which he extensively praised its characteristics. The foundation of the Le Berne winery dates back to the early 1960s, established by Egisto Natalini, the grandfather of Andrea, who currently manages all viticultural aspects as an agricultural expert. Alongside the winery's decades-long tradition, the oenologist Paolo Vagaggini has also joined, with whom the family is gradually innovating agricultural activities in terms of experimentation and refinement of winemaking techniques.
The Le Berne winery is located in the Cervognano area, in the municipality of Acquaviva di Montepulciano, and extends over 21 hectares, 6 of which are cultivated with vines, 3 with olive groves, and the remainder with arable land. The gentle hills on which the vineyards rest are of Pliocene origin, with the presence of pebbles and shell fossils that make the soils perfect for the growth of grapes suitable for the production of great structured reds. The origin of the name is also curious: Le Berne derives from the late Etruscan vocabulary term “verna,” which symbolizes a hill where one can “winter,” that is, spend the winter sheltered from the cold, mitigated by a climate that is never harsh.
Thus, Podere Le Berne boasts an ultra-decade-long history regarding Nobile di Montepulciano, which is offered in the basic version, intriguing and with a wide aromatic intensity, and the reserve, which differs from the first by an additional year of aging in French and Slavonian oak barrels and a more complex and enveloping aromatic profile. The Montepulciano red, a “petit vin” of the winery, is also highly enjoyable, managing to charm with its citrus freshness and light drinkability. A reality with traditional roots that expresses itself in great interpretations of the Poliziano terroir.
