Le Macchiole

Le Macchiole is a well-known name among wine enthusiasts, the name of a winery of excellence in the territory of Bolgheri responsible for some of the finest wines in all of Tuscany. The spouses Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli started this beautiful winemaking project in the early 1980s in Castagneto Carducci, in the province of Livorno, purchasing a small vineyard of 4 hectares at a time when the Bolgheri area did not enjoy the fame it has today. Currently, Cinzia and their children Elia and Mattia lead the winery, which takes its name from the restaurant owned by Eugenio Campolmi's parents, who unfortunately passed away in 2002.

Within the Le Macchiole estate, comprising over 35 hectares of vineyards, the Campolmi-Merli family cultivates the international grape varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. The plants are grown following the principles of organic farming, integrated since 2010 with biodynamic practices. Fundamental ingredients in determining the quality of the wines signed by Le Macchiole are the the Mediterranean and breezy climate of the territory and the sandy-clay nature of the soils, also rich in mineral skeleton. The agronomic and enological approach is meticulous and calibrated according to the reference parcel, with the harvest always carried out by hand and followed by a double selection of the grapes in the winery. Fermentations occur spontaneously in concrete tanks or stainless steel vats, accompanied by prolonged macerations on the skins, while for the subsequent aging phase, new and used barriques, tonneaux, and concrete tanks are adopted.

Over time, the wines of the Le Macchiole winery have established themselves as iconic labels of Tuscan winemaking, endowed with elegance and personality, as well as a style capable of condensing the spirit of the Etruscan Coast in the cultivated international grape varieties. In particular, the ‘Messorio’ and ‘Paleo Rosso’ are configured as some of the highest expressions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, respectively, having established themselves as cult wines worldwide.
