Le Vieux Joseph
Le Vieux Joseph is a small artisan winery nestled among the mountain rocks of Val d’Aosta, encompassing a total of about 2 hectares of vineyard, scattered across various micro-parcels located around the Chetoz hamlet, within the municipality of Quart. Ilaria Bavastro is the founder and sole worker of this small artisan reality, identifying her terroir here, on the left bank of the Dora Baltea, where her small fragments of vineyard rest on soils of morainic, glacial, and alluvial origin. The company vineyards are entirely cultivated using the bush vine method and are situated on terraces so steep they cannot be mechanized, but can only be worked by hand.
The Vieux Joseph winery was established in 2009, after Ilaria honed her ars agricola through experiences in Piemonte and Switzerland before returning to Valle d’Aosta, in Quart, where her roots are. Determined to enhance the winemaking tradition of her region, Ilaria decides to vinify her grapes drawing heavily from the artisan tradition, respecting the surrounding environment. The the varieties she cultivates with dedication are mainly native Valdostan grapes such as Cornalin, Vien de Nus, Petit Rouge, and Fumin, some preserved from old century-old vines that do not produce many bunches, but encapsulate a great sensory richness.
Also in the cellar at Le Vieux Joseph, every processing is carried out without the use of synthetic chemical substances, with simple and respectful vinifications that do not force the evolution times of the wines and do not succumb to the temptations of easy shortcuts through enological products. The only exception is for very slight and homeopathic doses of sulfur at bottling, which parameters remain well below the regional average levels. The two reds on offer are based solely on blends from specific vineyards, such as the “Mariadzo”, based on Cornalin, Vien de Nus, and Pinot Noir from Chetoz that releases a earthy and alpine expressiveness, or like the “Clos de Cartesan” from Moriondo and Daudry, based on Petit Rouge, Cornalin, Fumin, Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Ciliegiolo. Direct and unembellished wines, with a powerful territorial expressiveness.
