Leuta
The Leuta winery, which has become a virtuous model for the production of great Tuscan wines, was born from the initiative of Denis Zeni and Enzo Berlanda, two young entrepreneurs from Vallagarina in Trentino. In 2000, they acquired 21.5 hectares of land in Tuscany, in the territory of Cortona, one of the most vocated and promising areas. After long renovation works, they planted, over the years, 12 hectares of vineyard with a planting density of 8,000 vines/ha, including the first Cabernet Franc vineyard in the entire Cortona area.
The Leuta vineyards are located at an altitude of 310 meters, situated between the territory of Montepulciano and Lake Trasimeno. The soils are particularly suitable for vine cultivation: in fact, there are sandstones, marls, schists, clays, and groundwater debris, all excellent elements for developing a quality viticulture that is attentive, responsible, and sustainable. The particular pedoclimatic configuration is perfect for producing grapes from which to obtain intense, elegant, and structured reds. The vineyard estate is divided into 7 different vineyards: in 4, the international varieties Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Syrah are found, in two the Sangiovese together with about ten native Tuscan grape varieties, and in one, Georgian vines for conducting experiments. The high quality of production is the result of bold, costly, and uncompromising agronomic and oenological choices. In the vineyard, for example, the cultivation is organic, irrigation systems are not used, and most of the work is manual, including harvesting done with 10 kg crates. In the winery, the grapes are further selected, only peristaltic pumps are used, and for aging, only new barriques are utilized.
The Leuta wines, although they have only been on the market for a few years, have managed to assert themselves with strength and authority as great expressions of the Tuscan territory. "There is no base wine, but only wines that synthesize the intellectual honesty of being able to produce at the highest levels," guarantees Enzo Berlanda. They are rich, aromatic, and highly structured reds, a deeply Tuscan interpretation of native and international grape varieties. They are interpretations marked by power but also by balance and elegance. The harmony that distinguishes them is enhanced and communicated even in the labels, which reflect the values of the golden ratio.
