Macea
The Macea winery is a small agricultural reality nestled in the Serchio Valley, between the gentle mountain ranges of the Apuane Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The name of the estate comes from a locality in Borgo a Mazzano, a small town located on the high hills north of Lucca, almost on the border with Emilia, where the Barsanti family has found a unique balance with the surrounding nature and has cultivated the land for decades with commitment and passion. In this small territory, literally torn from the mountain, characterized by steep slopes and a harsh and inhospitable climate, the family tends a small vineyard.
Father Mauro was the first to believe in the potential of this "special place", to the point of carving out a small vegetable garden and a small vineyard to produce wine for personal consumption. The grapes are not easy to grow, they require time to mature and the climate certainly does not help. After the father's death, Cipriano decides to start marketing the wine previously produced by his father. Thus, he founded the company Agricola Macea was established in 2000 and plants just over an hectare and a half of Pinot Nero, Sauvignon, and Pinot Grigio, among the old vines over 50 years old that yield various grape varieties, some still unknown today. The vineyards are organized on two different hills, with different soils: the first, which hosts Sauvignon and Pinot Nero, is rich in galestro, while the second, populated by Pinot Grigio and other vines, has a rocky and sandy structure.
The idea behind the Macea winery is to safeguard ancient local varieties and respect the lush local nature. In 2003 they decided to follow the principles of biodynamic agriculture, relying solely on their own hands, without the use of mechanical means or tractors. Even in the small and "wild" winery, the product is followed with natural care: the winemaking is spontaneous, carried out by indigenous yeasts, in the absence of invasive processes, such as filtration or massive addition of sulfites. The results speakclearly: straightforward and sincere wines, that tell with a genuine simplicity about that small natural garden of Tuscany.
