Maculan
The family-run wine estate Maculan represents a benchmark for Venetian enology, a estate that has skillfully enhanced the territory of Breganze, managing to interpret it both in a traditional and a modern key. The foundation of the winery dates back to 1947, the year Giovanni Maculan began selling bulk wine, while the turning point came in 1973 with his son Fausto, who, armed with studies at the enological school of Conegliano, achieved the first independent bottlings focusing on quality. Thanks to Fausto, the winery began to equip itself with the most modern technologies in the sector, and the producer also introduced the use of barriques for aging the wines. Currently at the helm are Angela and Maria Vittoria Maculan, daughters of Fausto, who still supervises and coordinates the management.
Within the 35 hectares of owned vineyards, the Maculan estate cultivates a wide combination of local and international grape varieties, such as Vespaiola, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay,Moscato, Marzemino, Tai Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco. These varieties benefit from the hilly volcanic soils with a predominant tuff composition and in the winery, they are processed through a modern style, while still respecting the ancient tradition of Breganze. The vinifications take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, while for the subsequent aging, French oak barriques are often used, with a variable percentage of new wood. A peculiar technique is the drying of the bunches intended for Torcolato, which, after harvesting, are hung on beams with strings and twisted, “torcolati” in the local dialect.
Among the most iconic labels of the Maculan winery are Breganze Torcolato, a dessert wine that reflects the ancient local tradition of drying, the Passito ‘Acininobili’, a botrytized wine of rare aromatic concentration, and ‘Fratta’, an equivalent blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that stands out for its complexity and structure.
