Marques de Murrieta
The winery Marques de Murrieta takes its name from Luciano de Murrieta, one of the main innovators of winemaking in the small Spanish region of Rioja, which he officially founded in 1852. The foundations on which the winery strongly bases its activity are mainly represented by its centennial historical origins, which have contributed to shaping both its philosophy and its innovative vision capable of creating, in respect of tradition, this historical icon of Spanish viticulture.
The winery is located in the immediate vicinity of the southern tip of Rioja Alta, in the midst of the charming Ygay Estate, which includes an immense vineyard extending over about 300 hectares that provides the winemakers who work it with extreme quality grapes every vintage, a necessary factor for obtaining elegant and noble vinifications, a distinctive trait of the wines produced by Murrieta. The Ygay estate is, however, divided into smaller plots of land suited for the cultivation of different grape varieties, such as the single vineyard Capellanìa, dedicated to the the production of white grape Viura – also known as Macabeu – from which an intense and important territorial expression is obtained. Under the current guidance of owner Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell, the lands of the “domaine” have also expanded into neighboring Galicia, annexing the estate called Pazo Barrantes. This includes 12 hectares planted with Albariño from which a very fresh white is obtained, whose organoleptic profile plays on subtle nuances of unexpected elegance.
The production model that underlies the winery Marques de Murrieta exudes a contemporary internationalism that recalls, both in the product line and in the mere aesthetic physicality, the canons of the not too distant Bordeaux viticulture, crafting red vinifications of full depth and elegance and setting these processes in nothing less than a lavish castle.
