Matusalem
Matusalem & Co. is the name of a large distilling and rum production company based in the Dominican Republic. It has been active since 1872 and, throughout its long history, has contributed to elevating the famous Caribbean distillate worldwide, especially thanks to long aging in wood. From a traditional rough drink consumed by local populations, today rum is considered an elegant and refined distillate, rich in history and charm.
The Matusalem distillery was founded in Cuba by two Spanish brothers along with a distiller friend. For aging, the Solera Method was immediately adopted, imported from Spain and now widespread in the Caribbean, with the aim of producing very aged distillates. The reference to Methuselah, a biblical character who lived for 969 years, appeared on every label to emphasize and enhance the long aging. This insight proved successful and, in 1881, the distillery received the first of a long series of international recognitions. During the Cuban revolution, the company experienced a turbulent and troubled period, so much so that it was forced to move to the nearby Dominican Republic, where it is still based today.
The Spanish Style Rums signed by Matusalem & Company are famous and sought after worldwide. The production of sugar cane in the Dominican Republic allows for the production of an intense and high-quality molasses, but it is especially the aging with the Solera Method that significantly contributes to defining the distillery's distinctive style: 10 years for the “Clasico” and 15 for the “Gran Reserva”, to name just the most famous and widespread. The organoleptic profile is always marked by sweet, enveloping, and never excessive notes: hints of caramel, butter, dried and toasted fruit that leave the sip elegant and dry. This impeccable balance has contributed to the attribution and spread of the nickname “Cognac of Rum” to designate the various editions of Gran Reserva. These are very valid labels, appreciated by both occasional drinkers and enthusiasts.
