Mazzolino
Tenuta Mazzolino is a wine estate in the Oltrepò Pavese area, a land of Pinot Noir that the winery enhances through an approach based on sustainability. The Tenuta's history began in the 1980s when Enrico, grandfather of the current owner Francesca Seralvo, fell in love with a plot of land long known as 'the Pinot Nero hill'. He was then convinced by his great friends Luigi Veronelli and Giacomo Bologna, prominent figures in the Italian wine world, to bet everything on this noble vine of Burgundy origin, a variety already present in the area since the mid-19th century that would soon write the oenological history of Oltrepò. An important step dates back to 1999, when oenologist Kyriakos Kynigopoulos, originally from Greece and a great expert in Burgundy, joined the estate. Since 2015, the winery has therefore been run by Francesca, who with passion and dedication, and a strong innovative and creative vision, fuels her grandfather Enrico's dream of producing a great Pinot Noir in Oltrepò.
Tenuta Mazzolino owns 20 hectares of vines, cultivated according to organic farming principles and dedicated to Chardonnay, Moscato and Croatina, varieties that flank the estate's undisputed king: Pinot Noir. The soils on which the rows grow are characterised by steep slopes and are rich in clay, chalk and limestone, with the simultaneous presence of sandy and sandy substrates. The great variability of soil characteristics and exposure has led to the subdivision of the vineyards into no less than 39 different plots, each vinified separately. After manual harvesting, the grapes are then vinified through traditional fermentation and ageing in stainless steel tanks or Burgundian oak barrels. As far as bubbles are concerned, the Metodo Classico technique is mainly adopted, which involves re-fermentation in the bottle.
As mentioned, the focus of Tenuta Mazzolino's production is Pinot Noir, a variety declined both in the Metodo Classico sparkling wine version and as a still red in full Burgundy style. These wines are fresh and perfumed, very fragrant and juicy, an authentic expression of the Pinot Nero of the Oltrepò Pavese.
