Monte Maletto

Monte Maletto is a young reality created by Gian Marco Viano. Passionate about the world of wine, he started like many with a Sommelier course and then with a career that saw him engaged in famous restaurants, including some with Michelin stars. Thus was born the desire to challenge himself also in the field of wine production and to transform from Sommelier to winemaker. His adventure began in 2015 when he took over some vineyards in Carema to start a small artisanal production. His deep knowledge of the Italian and international wine landscape immediately oriented him towards an idea of wine linked to the concepts of purity, simplicity, and respect for the territory.

The Carema area is among the most fascinating in all of Piemonte. It is located at the entrance to the Aosta Valley, in an area with a particularly cool climate and strong temperature fluctuations between day and night. In this alpine habitat, Nebbiolo has found a place to express itself with elegant and characterful wines, born from poor and rocky lands.stony, torn from the mountain. The vineyards are a true work of architecture, created by building terraces with dry stone walls. The vines are trained on high pergolas supported by stone columns. The stones of this majestic work of ingenuity, besides having a structural function, store daytime heat to release it at night, thus mitigating low temperatures. Fascinated by this unique landscape and aware of the potential of the place, Gian Marco Viano was not discouraged by the hard work of heroic viticulture, which requires manual labor and a great commitment in the vineyard.

He learned the secrets of vine cultivation in this particular environment from local winemakers and decided to manage his vineyards with the utmost respect for the environment, without the use of chemicals. He only uses products approved by organic farming and also experiments with the use of seaweed extracts and essential oils to try to replace copper, which tends to accumulate in the soils. A healthy and respectful viticulture, based on a production philosophy linked to the idea of a wine that is a direct expression of the grapes. The same attention is given to cellar practices, with very simple vinifications, carried out with the sole objective of preserving the qualities of the grapes and enhancing the characteristics of a stony alpine terroir. A bet won. The first vintages are very interesting and the few bottles produced are flying off the shelves among enthusiasts.
