Montepepe
In the province of Massa, on the slope of the Montignoso hill, where the stony steep lands turn pink and the vines overlook the sea from terraces dating back two centuries, lies the winery Montepepe, led by Stefano Poggi, an architect who turned to viticulture out of passion. The winery is the result of a meticulous and significant architectural recovery starting from a property that belonged to Carlo Ludovico di Borbone, Duke of Lucca, which was then left in total abandonment. As part of the extraordinary agricultural and rural restoration, the dry stone walls and the attached stone channels that run through the terraces have been restored, thus making it possible to cultivate the vineyard, planted in 2004.
In the total five hectares of vineyards of Montepepe, there are 18,000 vines, planted half a meter apart and cultivated on trellises, with bush pruning oriented. The soil is very mineral, rich in metamorphic stones like manganese and silt and clay. The surface is evenly divided between one half where the white grape varieties are found and another half where we find the red grape varieties; among the whites, Vermentino and Viogner stand out, while among the reds, Syrah and Massaretta. The winery, carved out of the ground floor of the restored villa, features a remarkable barrel vault and a semi-buried wine cellar above which, through a green roof, an olive grove has been planted. The mass of the overlying soil thus allows for the maintenance of optimal temperature and constant humidity throughout the production process.
After only a few harvests, Stefano has shown great talent in crafting wines that have distinguished themselves among the best in the area, characterized by the denominations of Colli del Candia and Costa Toscana. The white wines of Montepepe present an increasingly defined profile, based on finesse and a broad and rich minerality. The reds, on the other hand, are material, fruity, and fresh, with a finish that recalls spices and the hints of aging wood. Emerging as a surprising and magnificent novelty of the Massa territory, Montepepe has now become a certainty: a productive reality of great value destined to amaze and excite with its wines.
