Murgo

The origins of the Murgo Winery date back to 1860, when Senator Luigi Gravina donated about 30 hectares of vineyards on Etna to the Scammacca family. An agricultural estate, which after a century was converted by Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo into a modern wine estate. The property is located near Santa Venerina, on the eastern slope of the volcano, directly overlooking the sea. In 1981, the first bottle was produced under the Murgo brand, and since then the company has continued to grow both quantitatively and qualitatively, establishing itself as one of the most interesting realities in the area, also for its production of excellent quality Metodo Classico, which began in 1990 and was made with the indigenous grape variety Nerello Mascalese.

The eastern slope of Etna enjoys a particular microclimate, cooler, rainier, and with good temperature excursions due to the proximity of the sea. The soils are of volcanic nature, composed of ashes, lapilli, and lava from ancient flows. The estate is managed with the utmost respect for the surrounding environment and is currently in organic conversion. The company is also committed to adopting sustainability practices that range from reducing water waste, to using energy from renewable sources, to choosing eco-friendly and recyclable packaging. The property covers a total area of 60 hectares, divided into three different estates: Tenuta San Michele, Tenuta Gelso Bianco, and Tenuta La Francescana. Another 60 hectares are dedicated to olive groves for the production of extra virgin olive oil and to citrus groves for the production of artisanal jams.

Tenuta Murgo has managed to maintain a family dimension and an approach to the territory linked to ancient customs. The knowledge of the land and the historical grape varieties of Etna is the basis for producing grapes of excellent quality. The winery is located in Tenuta San Michele, at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level. The winemaking and aging practices are simple and minimally invasive, to preserve the richness of the varietal composition of the grapes, both red and white. The wines express the freshness and elegance typical of mountain viticulture, combined with the sapidity and minerality of the volcanic soils.
