Muxagat

Muxagat is a Portuguese winery located in the hinterland of Porto, in the Douro region, in a land where the vine has been cultivated for millennia to produce some of the best Portuguese wines, famous in the world even in past centuries. The winery is a young reality, founded only in 2002, in an absolutely virgin and untouched area of the Alto Douro. The project was born from the desire to create a wine capable of expressing the best of the peculiarities of the territory. The winery is located in Mêda, in an ancient village scattered in a rough and rugged land, characterized by a stony, austere soil and a very cold climate in winter and dry and hot in summer.

In such a difficult and inhospitable territory, it took an extraordinary willpower and determination to embark on the adventure of wine on the steep schist slopes of the Douro Valley. The vineyards of Muxagat are located at different altitudes and exposures and take root in rocky, poor, and difficult-to-cultivate soils. The cultivated grape varieties are the traditional ones of the area, which have best adapted over the centuries to the difficult conditions of the zone. Among the rows, work is done in harmony and tune with an uncontaminated natural context, and also in the winery, fermentations and vinifications are favored that are carried out in the utmost simplicity, without the use of modern oenological techniques, but rather referring to the oldest customs and still using traditional cement tanks.

The result of this adventurous project is a wine with a strong personality, which authentically expresses the character of the territory. This is precisely the most important result of Muxagat, having succeeded in perfectly attuning with the nature of the Alta Valle del Douro and being able to interpret it directly, bringing into the glass exactly the product of the vineyard. These are wines that speak a straightforward and transparent language, without fashionable stylistic inspirations or dictated by the international success of some oenological models. The wines of Muxagat express great purity and the strength of a land of noble traditions and ancient autochthonous grape varieties.autochthonous.
