Opus One

Opus One is undoubtedly one of the most important wineries in Napa Valley, the famous wine-producing area of California. It was founded in 1979 through a valuable collaboration between the baron-owner of Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, one of the most significant figures in American winemaking. From the very beginning, the intent has been to tell the uniqueness and potential of this New World territory through the know-how of two great icons in the wine world, favoring a Bordeaux-style approach, starting with the use of international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon – which occupies the largest cultivated area of the total 68 hectares – Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. In a short time, the winery has become a reference point for enthusiasts and producers, representing today, after more than 40 years, the emblem of modern winemaking. A consistent production of undisputed quality that allows Opus One to sit in the Olympus of great global producers.

The Opus One winery is an imposing artistic work, an architectural gem but also functional, in which for decades true liquid paintings have been produced, which for years have been the most expensive in Napa Valley. The spectacular estate in Oakville was built between 1989 and 1991, the year of the first vintage produced in this new structure. The vineyards, cultivated for over 80% with Cabernet Sauvignon, are managed with an eco-sustainable approach and certified “Napa Green”. The grapes are processed exclusively from a single vineyard; they are carefully selected and brought to the winery, where an “optical sorter” camera analyzes the size, defects, and color of each berry. All processes are carried out by Opus One staff enologists thanks to the effect of gravity, starting from the steel press located on the ground floor and the fermentation tanks and barriques located on the lower floor.
