Petrolo

Within the area of Val d'Arno di Sopra, in the province of Arezzo, the name Petrolo stands out, a winery that has established itself over the years as a synonym for quality and sustainability. The estate, located in the municipality of Mercatale Valdarno, was acquired in the 1940s by the Bazzocchi family, who continued the work of enhancing the long and qualitative viticultural and olive-growing tradition of the estate, dating back centuries and evidenced by Cosimo III Grand Duke of Tuscany, who in 1716 listed the area of Val d'Arno di Sopra among the four prestigious areas of Chianti. In the Middle Ages, the estate was part of the feudal land of Galatrona, as evidenced by the ancient tower of Galatrona that still rises above the estate today. Today, Luca and Maria Sanjust di Teulada run the winery with the same competence and passion as their ancestors Gastone Bazzocchi, who acquired the estate in 1947, and his daughter Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust. Among the foundations that guide production is the belief that “at Petrolo there is no base wine, only great wines”.

Petrolo includes over 270 hectares of owned land, of which 31 are dedicated to viticulture and the remaining part reserved for olive groves, woods, and three ponds where sport fishing is possible. In the hectares of vineyards, following the principles of organic farming, the estate cultivates a mix of Tuscan and international grape varieties such as Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Trebbiano Toscano. The vines are planted in medium-textured soils rich in skeleton, with rocky stratifications of galestro, sandstone, and alberese, located at an altitude between 250 and 450 meters above sea level. For fermentations and aging, vitrified cement tanks, terracotta amphorae, barriques, or French oak tonneaux are used, depending on the label in question.

The production of the Petrolo winery is a blend of tradition and internationality, with the 'Boggina' line reinterpreting traditional Tuscan grape varieties, Sangiovese and Trebbiano, in original and exceptionally elegant forms. From the international grape varieties, the famous 'Galatrona', one of the greatest Italian Merlots, the 'Torrione' and the 'Campo Lusso'.
