Pico Maccario
The Pico Maccario winery is a reality of Piedmontese wine, present with its vineyards in the prestigious territories of Langhe and Monferrato, always cradle of some of the best wines in the region. The estate was born from the initiative of brothers Pico and Vitaliano Maccario, who still today manage it with expert hands and produce a range of quality wines that represent the traditions of the territory very well. The winery's goal has always been maximum quality without compromise. A choice that has involved great attention to the agronomic management of the vineyard and particular care for the winery, which has been equipped in a modern way, with the best technologies available today, always put at the service of enhancing a raw material of excellent qualitative level and with the unique characteristics of a wonderful terroir.
The estate is divided into two distinct properties, one in the Monferrato area and the other in Langhe. The Monferrato estate extends over an area of over 100 hectares, in a single body, cultivated with the main grape varieties historically present among these hills, such as Barbera, Cortese, and Moscato d'Asti. However, there are also some vineyards dedicated to international white grape varieties, which have proven to adapt very well to the place, particularly Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc. The climate is mild and breezy, and the soils are medium-textured, predominantly clay-based. The vineyards are managed with attention to the environment and are bordered by five thousand rose plants, which promote natural biodiversity.
In the famous hilly area of Langhe, the Pico Maccario winery owns prestigious vineyards located in the municipalities of Neive, Serralunga d'Alba, and Barolo, in the latter municipality also in the famous cru Cannubi. The soils are composed of calcareous-clay marl with the presence of sand and silt, originating from an ancient seabed during the Miocene. The particularly suited soils and the cool, sunny climate are the cradle of Nebbiolo, the principal grape variety of this territory renowned worldwide for its elegant, intense, and long-lived reds. The style of the wines is characterized by the utmost respect for the place where they are born, with careful and delicate parcel vinifications. Depending on the labels and the grape variety, the aging takes place in stainless steel tanks, in large barrels, in tonneau, or in French oak barriques.
