Podere Fortuna
At the foot of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, in the Mugello area, the Podere Fortuna winery has been one of the first estates to focus on Pinot Nero, a noble variety of Burgundian origin that has found its ideal habitat in the cool climate of Northern Tuscany. The estate, located precisely in the locality of San Giusto a Fortuna, was once owned by Lorenzo Il Magnifico and today belongs to the Lowenstein family, already the owners of the splendid Villa Medicea di Cafaggiolo. The Lowenstein family has introduced significant innovations such as the conversion to organic farming and the introduction of new labels.
Podere Fortuna consists of just over 30 hectares of land, of which 6 are reserved for vines, cultivated under certified organic regime. The plants benefit from the significant temperature fluctuations between day and night that characterize the summer period, as well as from the clayey and moderately calcareous soils and the altitude of about 250 meters. Alongside Pinot Nero, the true varietal focus of the winery, Podere Fortuna cultivates a small plot of Chardonnay. Once the grapes have reached the desired level of ripeness, manual harvesting and careful selection take place. The vinifications are parcel-based, and all Pinot Nero ferments in conical wooden vats at controlled temperature thanks to the sole action of indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the masses age in medium-toasted French oak barriques for about a year, followed by an additional 6 months of maturation in cement during which spontaneous and natural clarification occurs. This aims to avoid invasive techniques of induced clarification and filtration. After a bottle aging period ranging from 6 to 24 months, the wines are finally ready for market release.
The Podere Fortuna winery offers various interpretations of Pinot Nero, all characterized by soft elegance and great harmony. The ‘Fortuni’ comes from one of the oldest plots, thus distinguished by a deeper and spicier character, while the ‘Coldaia’ is made from the youngest vineyard, resulting in a greater freshness and a more pronounced fruit.
