Poggio di Sotto
Poggio di Sotto is one of the prominent wine estates in the Montalcino area, a noble Tuscan region masterfully interpreted by the estate. The winery was founded in 1989 by Piero Palmucci, a great wine enthusiast, in the locality of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, at the foot of Monte Amiata, on the southeast slope of the Montalcino hill. Today the estate is run by Claudio Tipa and Maria Iris Tipa Bertarelli, entrepreneurs from Colle Massari, a production reality that, in addition to Poggio di Sotto, brings together 3 other important wineries in Tuscany: Grattamacco, San Giorgio, and Castello Colle Massari.
Fattoria Poggio di Sotto covers 48 hectares of owned land, of which 20 are dedicated to vineyards, 19 to olive groves, and the remaining part to woods. The plants, cultivated according to the principles of organic farming, are located on steep hillside slopes facing south, at an altitude ranging from 200 to 400 meters above sea level. The Sangiovese Grosso, the undisputed king of the Montalcino territory, is the only variety cultivated by the estate, which benefits from the presence of marine breezes coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea on one side and the protection of Monte Amiata on the other. The climate is characterized by significant temperature excursions between day and night even in summer, while the soils are particularly rich in skeleton, with the presence of galestro and claystones in the basal portion and clay and conglomerates towards the top of the hill. In the winery, fermentations occur spontaneously in conical wooden tanks of 70 hectoliters, accompanied by long macerations on the skins and frequent pump-overs. After the complete malolactic fermentation, the wines age in large Slavonian oak barrels of 30 hectoliters for varying periods depending on the label in question.
the quintessence of this iconic wine. Finally, the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a monument to the territory and the grape variety, produced exclusively in the best vintages.Poggio di Sotto is one of the prominent wine estates in the Montalcino area, a noble Tuscan region masterfully interpreted by the estate.
