Port Ellen
Port Ellen is considered one of the best distilleries in Scotland for the production of Single Malt Whisky. It was founded in 1825 by Alexander Ker Mackay and is located on the southern coast of Islay, not far from the port town it is named after. After various ownership changes, it ceased whisky production in 1929 but continued to produce barley malt with its 4 stills, supplying most of the island's distilleries. In 1967, the plant was completely renovated but, due to the decline of the Scotch whisky market in the '80s, the distillery had to close its doors permanently in 1983. In the meantime, both some independent releases and some official bottlings from historic casks aged between 20 and 35 years had been released. The casks inside the distillery are about to be emptied and the labels on the market are set to disappear. The Port Ellen whiskies produced since then have quickly become some of the rarest and most sought-after Scotches in the world, appreciated for their exceptional quality and unmistakable character, a true object of cult and desire for enthusiasts and collectors.
For the distillation process, Port Ellen drew water directly from the Laorin Lochs. Due to the enormous presence of peat on the island, Islay water is brown and contributes to giving Port Ellen whisky its unique, smoky flavor. The malt from the Port Ellen distillery is very versatile, with significant style differences among the various bottlings. Some expressions produced from Sherry casks turn out to be intense, spicy, sweet, and with hints of leather. Meanwhile, those obtained from Bourbon casks often show a more austere, peppery, elegant, and powerful character. All share a high level of purity and a surprising complexity. The strength of Port Ellen whisky is that it demonstrates a great balance, managing to perfectly blend the sweetness of the malt with the peaty and briny character of the coast.
