The young Chilean winery Pu Wines was born in 2019 with the aim of expressing the true identity of Bio Bio, a region located in the central zone of Chile named after the homonymous river. The project was undertaken by Patrick Burke, a young man of German origin with a great passion for wine who, after studying architecture, several vintages in European wineries, and a period working on cruise ships, landed in Chile deciding to settle down, captivated by the culture and landscapes of the place. In Chile, Patrick began working at a small local winery in 2017, refining his technique and embarking on his own personal adventure two years later with Pu Wines.
Patrick's beautiful vineyards at Pu Wines are dedicated to the Moscatel de Alejandria, País, and Cinsault grape varieties, represented by very old vines, often over a hundred years old, rooted ungrafted in volcanic, clayey, and sandy soils. The plants, which are never irrigated, also benefit from the cool climate of the area and Patrick's agronomic management, based on the principles of biodynamics. Harvesting is strictly done by hand, and in the cellar, fermentations take place entirely spontaneously in the so-called "tinajas," ancient traditional terracotta amphorae of 400 and 1,100 liters, or in typical raulí wood vats called "lagar," accompanied by long macerations on the skins even for white grapes. After the maceration period, which in some cases lasts up to 6 months, the wines are transferred to exhausted oak barrels for the aging phase preceding the final bottling. Throughout the entire winemaking process, clarification and filtration operations are banned, as well as the use of additives and oenological aids, including sulfites.
The production of Pu Wines consists of wines with a rustic and lively character, full of vigor and energy. Indeed, the illustrations on the labels already hint at the carefree spirit that will be found in the glass, whether it's the lively fruitiness of Pais or the savory and subtly aromatic taste of Moscatel de Alexandria.
