Raina
Raina is a small winery located in Montefalco, born from Francesco Mariano's desire to take on a challenge. Francesco, who is not only a winemaker but also a chef, decided to embark on the path of wine in 2002, taking over the winery owned by "Raina", a farmer who had been dedicating himself to the vine in these areas for decades. Between 2002 and 2008, work began on planting the vineyards, aiming to lay the foundations for quality production.
From the very beginning, Francesco wanted to enhance the environment that hosts him, protecting it, and thus adopting a production philosophy that does not hinder the renewal of natural resources. A philosophy that leads to precise choices in the vineyard, and that in the winery involves the use of photovoltaic systems for 70% of the total energy needs, while the remaining 30% is supplied by nearby hydroelectric plants. A young man with clear ideas, who knows exactly where to go in the future, with a production of wines that magnificently interpret the classic varieties of the terroir of Montefalco.
Raina has about ten hectares of vineyards scattered around the municipality of Montefalco, one of the most dedicated wine-growing areas in all of Umbria. In the vineyard, since 2012, biodynamic agriculture has been practiced, certified by the control body Codex, part of a project entirely focused on maintaining soil richness. No chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides are used, and treatments involve sulfur, copper, infusions, and decoctions of plants. Every phase of processing, from pruning to harvesting, is carried out manually.
In the winery, no chemical products are used except for a moderate use of sulfites, and at the end of the winemaking and aging process, red wines are never filtered, while vintage whites may be subject to a light roughing.primarily the Sagrantino, presented by Francesco with the label "Campo di Raina".
