Roberto Cipresso
Roberto Cipresso is a producer from the Montalcino area, Tuscany, known for his eclectic and innovative personality. Originally from Bassano del Grappa, Roberto moved to Montalcino in 1987 where he began dedicating himself to winemaking. His personal wine adventure began in 1995 following the purchase of Poggio al Sole, an ancient farmhouse with just one hectare of vineyard located at the foot of Sant’Angelo in Colle, a few kilometers southwest of the municipality of Montalcino. In 1999 he founded Winemaking, a group of agronomic and enological consulting, while in 2016, after more than twenty years of research, he started the ‘Cipresso 43’ project together with his brother Gianfranco, intending to enhance the expressions of wine territories located along the 43° northern parallel, in the regions of Tuscany, Umbria, and Marche, based on the use of indigenous grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Sagrantino, Verdicchio, and Vermentino. The producer is also dedicated to writing and with the publishing house Piemme has published several successful books, such as ‘The Novel of Wine’, ‘Vineide’, ‘Vinosofia’, and ‘Wine. The Secret Novel’. The few hectares of vineyards that Roberto Cipresso cultivates in Montalcino are exclusively dedicated to Sangiovese Grosso, a variety that has written the history of the area. The plants are located between 250 and 350 meters above sea level and the yields in grapes per hectare are kept very low. The agronomic operations are carried out entirely by hand, in order to respect the integrity of the soil, the plant, and the grapes, while in the cellar Roberto's approach is rather modernist, with alcoholic fermentations in steel or in truncated-conical tanks and aging in barriques and oak tonneaux. Focusing on the reality of Roberto Cipresso, the producer exclusively makes a Rosso di Montalcino, a Brunello di Montalcino, and a Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, elegant and modern expressions of the territory. In particular, the vineyard of Sant’Angelo in Colle is dedicated to Brunello while the Rosso di Montalcino comes from another plot located near the Abbey of Sant’Antimo.
