Rocco di Carpeneto
Rocco di Carpeneto is a winery in Monferrato that produces excellent wines with great territorial typicity. Its philosophy is very simple and is based on a few solid principles: the safeguarding of an important heritage of old vineyards and the enhancement of the grape varieties historically present in this area of Piemonte, without any concessions to trends or international deviations. The wines are made with artisanal passion and the entire production cycle, from vineyard management to cellar practices, is inspired by the utmost respect for the grapes of excellent quality. Everything is thought out and implemented to create a range of labels capable of representing the authentic face of this land and the values of a healthy and genuine viticulture.
The name of the winery refers to the ancient expression used since the 15th century to call the area of Carpeneto d'Acqui. The estate is located in the south of Piemonte, towards the border with Liguria, in a land always suited for vine cultivation. The territory is composed of gentle hills with an altitude of about 250 meters above sea level,of the sea, characterized by a mild and breezy climate, influenced by the presence of sea breezes. The estate covers a total of about a dozen hectares, with vineyards planted between 1955 and 1986. The cultivated varieties are the classic ones of the area: cortese, barbera, dolcetto, freisa, albarossa, and nebbiolo. The soils are predominantly clay-silty, with sandy veins present. The inter-row areas are grassed and green manure with legumes and grasses is practiced to make the soils more fertile and promote biodiversity. Agronomic practices are carried out with full respect for the environment, using only minimal doses of sulfur and copper.
The estate is divided into numerous vineyards, with microclimatic differences and variations in soil composition, so that each grape variety can be cultivated in the most suitable place. The new winery was built in 2012 and was designed on three levels, in order to take advantage of gravity for the transitions from the grape reception area to the winemaking area and finally to the aging area. The fermentations are take place in cement or steel tanks using only indigenous yeasts, and the wines mature in steel tanks, cement, terracotta dolia, or exhausted wooden barrels, in order to avoid the transfer of aromas to the wine. In the winery, no additives or clarifying agents are used, and no filtration, clarification, or stabilization operations are performed, and the sulfur percentage is very low: for all wines below the threshold of 10 mg/l.
