Prum S.A.

The Weingut S.A. Prum is a historic winery in the Moselle Valley, Germany, with a centuries-old tradition. The Prum family has been cultivating vineyards and producing wine since 1156, becoming, over the centuries, the historical and qualitative reference for the entire region. This long family tradition is marked by very important milestones in the winemaking history of the region. In the mid-19th century, Mathias inherited 17 hectares of land from his father, which at the time represented the largest private estate in the Moselle. His son, Sebastian Alois Prum, expanded these holdings and founded, in 1911, the winery that still bears his name. Since then, four generations have passed, and now this important family reality is in the hands of winemaker Saskia Andrea, the first woman in the family to be responsible for the estate.

The vineyards of the SA Prum winery now extend over 30 hectares along the steep and rugged banks of the Moselle and its tributaries Saar and Ruwer. Half of these vineyards are included in the best crus of the area, exclusively cultivated with Riesling and often populated by ungrafted vines: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Drompropst, and Bernkastel. Strong slopes and very mineral soils characterize the area, consisting of dark slate hills overlooking the river. The winery is underground and dates back over a century; here, the winemaking processes are carried out in respect of tradition, and the motto is “yes to modern technology but no to high technology.” Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled steel containers. The best wines mature in large barrels over 60 years old called Fuder, with a capacity of 1,000 liters. Due to their age and capacity, these containers do not impart any wood flavor to the wine, contributing only to a slight micro-oxidation.

The Riesling of S.A. Prum are important wines characterized by great freshness and intense minerality and, like all the best expressions of the Moselle, can evolve positively in the bottle for decades. They are the children of the particular vineyard from which they originate and are the fruit of the tradition of the territory, produced by a family that has contributed to the greatness and prestige of the Riesling of the Moselle.
