Salomon Estate

Salomon Estate is an Australian winery located in the southern area of the island. The history of the estate has very ancient origins. Bert Salomon represents the seventh generation of a famous dynasty of Austrian winemakers, already renowned in 1792 for producing some of the best Riesling and Grüner Veltliner in the Kremstal region. During the 1980s, Bert also began an import business for Australian wines. His wife Gertrud, a successful manager in a major cosmetics multinational and a great wine enthusiast, decided to leave her career to dedicate herself to a new professional and life project to realize together with her husband. Their love for the world of wine and the desire to radically change their existence led them to Australia in search of a new life.

During their journey in Australia to find the ideal place to settle, Gertrud and Bert fell in love with the stunning natural landscape of the area near the Finniss River, in the Fleurieu Peninsula. They handed over the managementof the Austrian estate to their children Fay Marie and Bert Michael,

Gertrud and Bert decided to focus on the new Australian project, with the collaboration of Mark Farmilo, an old friend and former winemaker of the famous Penfold winery. The area, which already hosted vineyards, proved to be particularly suited. The Finniss valley is located in a region that also includes the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale areas. The cool and breezy climate, along with sunny exposures, ensures perfect ripening of the grapes, particularly for the French varieties: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Viognier.

The vineyard in the Finniss River valley extends along the southeast slope of the Adelaide Hills area, towards the Fleurieu Peninsula, at an altitude of about 120 meters above sea level. The soils consist of gravel and sands of morainic origin, resting on a subsoil of clay and limestone. A very well-draining surface soil that retains valuable water reserves in depth for the hotter and drier periods of the year. The vines are cultivated within an environmental contextstill wild and unspoiled and are managed with the utmost respect for nature. Thus, elegant and rich wines are born, the result of long family experience and a terroir with remarkable potential.
