Salvatore Marino

Salvatore Marino is undoubtedly one of the most interesting personalities in the Sicilian wine scene. A winemaker who has made love for his land the foundation of his winemaking approach. Far from any industrial logic and trends, he has embarked on a personal journey linked to environmental sustainability, which has led him to pay increasing attention to work in the vineyard, to obtain high-quality grapes.  His project was born in 2017, but it is based on the experience of five generations of winemakers and their centuries-old knowledge, passed down from generation to generation to this day.

The estate of Salvatore Marino is located near Pachino, precisely in a place aptly called Contrada Buonivini, famous for centuries for high-quality production. We are just a few kilometers from the unspoiled and wild nature of the Vendicari Nature Reserve and the picturesque fishing village of Marzamemi.  The territory of this area of Val di Noto is characterized by very suitable soils, composed mainly of limestone, mixed with sands and clays, which give the wines great elegance and finesse, producing reds of remarkable charm. The climate is dry and hot, mitigated and always ventilated by the constant presence of sea breezes, which keep the grapes dry and healthy, preventing many vine diseases.

The philosophy of Salvatore Marino's company is based on great respect for the land and the natural balance of the ecosystem, within which viticulture must fit harmoniously, without disrupting its overall structure and without disturbing its balances. The vineyards are planted according to the ancient alberello system, which allows the plant to channel the little moisture that settles on the leaves towards the roots. The management of the vineyards follows the principles of organic farming and biodynamic practices. Fertilizations are done using only green manure or, when necessary, organic manure. The operations are carried out naturally, following the phases of the lunar calendar. The winemaking is done in a very simple way, trying to intervene as little as possible in the transformation of the grape into wine. The result is a range of wines with an authentic and straightforward character, which bring to the forefront the varietal notes of the historic vines of the area and the characteristics of the magnificent terroir of Pachino.
