Murana Salvatore

Salvatore Murana is a great reference point for Pantelleria, a family-run winery that has been dedicated to the production of Zibibbo wine on the island for over 125 years. Salvatore is indeed the last of six generations of winemakers, but he was the first, in the 1960s, to start marketing labels under his own name outside the borders of Pantelleria. His winery is immersed in the wonderful nature of the island, particularly in the small district of Mueggen, a small green oasis sheltered from the sea and the wind, also known as “the island within the island”. In these fairy-tale oases, it is not uncommon to also find productions of olives, capers, and sun-dried tomatoes.

The vineyards of Salvatore Murana extend over about 17 hectares in the most vocated areas of the island of Pantelleria, in districts with ancient Arabic names such as Gadir, Martingana, Mueggen, Khamma, Praia, Ghirlanda, and Coste. The vines, represented exclusively by Zibibbo, a local clone of the aromatic grape varietyMoscato di Alessandria, are cultivated according to the traditional low bush training system on volcanic soils. Each vine is arranged on terraces, sometimes preserved in the typical Panteschi gardens surrounded by lava stone walls, with specimens that exceed even a century of age. After the harvest, the bunches are carefully selected and then placed to dry under the sun for weeks, a process that leads to strong dehydration and consequent concentration of sugars and aromas in the berries. This is followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and then a prolonged aging period, always in steel or in small oak barrels of multiple passes.

The Passito di Pantelleria by Salvatore Murana, a true pride of the winery, are concentrated and robust wines, expressions of the warmth, light, and sea of theisland. With their myriad of enticing organoleptic sensations, the labels signed by Salvatore Murana can transport the senses to Pantelleria, amongcitrus fruits, Mediterranean herbs, prickly pears, and, of course, capers.
