Schiavenza

The Schiavenza winery boasts over half a century of presence in the Langa area. It was founded in 1956 by brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba. Today, son-in-law Luciano Pira, an agronomist and winemaker, passionately carries on the traditional production of great Piedmontese red wines, proudly represented by the “King of Wines”: Barolo. The farmhouse and the surrounding territory were once owned by the Opera Pia di Barolo, which entrusted the work of the lands to sharecroppers, called “schiavenza”. The company takes its name from these latter. Over the years, the company has expanded to about eight hectares of vineyards in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, but the company also owns 4 hectares of vineyard in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba, the homeland of the famous "Monfortino".

The predominant grape variety in these vineyards is Nebbiolo, from which exclusively very high-quality red wines are produced, crafted with artisanal care, following the Piedmontese winemaking tradition. The range of wines produced is limited to seven different types, only two of which are not derived from Nebbiolo: Barbera d'Alba doc and Dolcetto d'Alba doc, the other 5 are "children" of that Nebbiolo, which, without fear of contradiction, is the most famous Piedmontese grape variety:

Langhe Nebbiolo doc, three different varieties of Barolo: "Prapò", "Broglio" and "Bricco Cerretta", alongside a Barolo Chinato flavored according to an old family recipe. The winery itself offers an excellent opportunity to taste its wines by visiting the trattoria where mom Lucia and daughter Maura prepare typical dishes from Langa, skillfully pairing them with the house wines and those of the most important producers in Serralunga.
