Tenuta di Fessina
Tenuta di Fessina is an important reality of Etna winemaking founded in 2007 in Castiglione di Sicilia, on the slopes of Mount Etna. The founder of the winery was Silvia Maestrelli, daughter of a family of Florentine entrepreneurs who, falling in love with the territory in 2006, decided to embark with her husband Roberto Silva on a winemaking project focused on quality and the enhancement of local tradition. The heart of the estate is represented by an 18th-century lava stone palmento equipped with an ancient chianca, a traditional press used for pressing the pomace. Unfortunately, Silvia passed away in 2022, but her legacy has been taken up by her daughter Lavinia Silva, who relies on an expert and cohesive team of collaborators.
The 14 hectares of vineyards that extend over Tenuta di Fessina are dedicated to the traditional varieties of Etna, namely Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for black grape varieties and Carricante and Minnella among the white grapes. The vineyards are managedaccording to the principles of organic farming, they rest on black soils of volcanic origin rich in sand, fine disaggregated clays, ancient powders, skeleton, and mineral elements, resulting from the accumulation of pumice, lapilli, and ashes over time. In addition to the peculiar pedological matrix, the plants benefit from high altitudes, which exceed even 1,000 meters above sea level, as well as from the constant sea breezes blowing from the Mediterranean Sea and the significant temperature excursions between day and night. For vinifications and aging, stainless steel tanks, large barrels, or oak tonneaux are used, the use of which varies depending on the wine in question.
Among the symbolic labels of the Tenuta di Fessina winery are the Etna Bianco ‘A’ Puddara’ and the Etna Rosso Riserva ‘Musmeci’, authentic reflections of the strong mineral character of Etna wines. In particular, the cru ‘A’ Puddara’ is dedicated to the stars that can be seen at the top of the volcano in summer, while the cru ‘Musmeci’
